Light-n-Polite, Foundation Horse Training Process
More on Process: Foundation training reviews the same skills that are essential in starting a horse. Basic skills are assessed and reinforced before more advanced skills are taught; much as the dressage pyramid advances, in order, from Rhythm, Relaxation, & Connection to Impulsion, Straightness, and Collection.
Basic skills include:
1) No fear of the trainer or tools
2) Proper response to training (an honest try, rather than acting out)
3) Development of 2-way communication and trust
4) Manners and safety
5) Basic control on the ground and under saddle
It is easy and common to skip over the development of foundation skills as we focus on the discipline we want to pursue. This is often not intentional. Skills that have been taught can fade over time if they are not used or if rules are not consistently enforced. Even a well trained horse can gradually become difficult to handle, or less capable and compliant. In these cases a foundation refresher usually helps.
